About Crocodiles

CULTURAL LEGENDS

Because crocodiles are found all over the world, including the tropical regions of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia, they are the subject of many myths and folk creations in the cultures of those regions.  In addition, crocodile spirit animals are present in many of the spiritual belief imagery and artwork of these cultures.

COSTA RICAN PREDETORS

Costa Rica is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, and among its most remarkable inhabitants are the mighty crocodiles. The country is predominantly home to two types: the formidable American Crocodile, known locally as “Cocodrilo Americano,” thriving in the freshwater rivers, coastal estuaries, and even in some mangrove swamps; and the smaller, more elusive Spectacled Caiman, residing in the country’s wetlands. These ancient reptiles, integral to the region’s biodiversity, can be spotted basking along the riverbanks of the Tarcoles River, a sight that attracts visitors from around the globe. With conservation efforts in place, Costa Rica offers a unique opportunity to observe these incredible creatures in their natural habitat, contributing to the rich tapestry of wildlife in Costa Rica.

Being ambush hunters, crocodiles sneak up on their prey.  They have excellent night vision, which gives them an added advantage.  In addition, they can detect changes in pressure in the water, which allows them to locate prey more easily.  As such, crocodiles are a symbol of stealth, caution, and surprise attack.  Unlike alligators, which live mainly in freshwater, crocodiles have special glands that allow them to survive in both fresh and saltwater environments.  In addition, they live on land.  As a result, these skilled hunters can find food in both land and water environments.  When they do catch their prey, they barely chew, often swallowing it whole!

SKILLED AMBUSH HUNTERS

THEIR NATIVE HABITAT

With their large, sharp teeth, crocodiles radiate their power without even trying.  And as top predators, they are truly the bosses of their own domains.  Thus, they are also symbols of power, authority and sovereignty.

Near Villas Rio Mar you may occasionally see one of these magnificent creatures near the mouth of the Rio Baru or near the road bridge.  Keep a close eye out, since they are shy and often difficult to spot.
